Each generation, you have 100 mutation points (MP) to spend, and each change (or mutation) will cost a certain amount of that MP. Adding and removing organelles costs MP. However, removing organelles that were placed in the current Editor session refunds MP for that organelle. You can move (and rotate) or remove an organelle by right-clicking on it and selecting from the pop-up menu.

The main ways that cells gain energy are by feeding on the environment around them - which is called [b]autotrophy[/b] - and feeding on other cells or parts from dead cells - which is called [b]heterotrophy[/b]. Both are important parts of the [b]food chain[/b].

[b]Cellulose[/b] and [b]chitin[/b] cell walls can't be digested without having the enzymes that can break them down first. These enzymes are produced by [color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:lysosome]Lysosomes[/url][/color], which are exclusive to eukaryotes. Prokaryotes don't have such organelles, and digest their food less efficiently. For small cells this is fine, but for larger cells, having no [color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:lysosome]Lysosomes[/url][/color] can be a big disadvantage.

The [color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:bindingAgent]Binding Agent[/url][/color] allows your cell and others of its species to build a cell [b]colony[/b] where the cells share the compounds they absorb and produce with each other. While in a colony, you can't enter the editor. To do this, you must leave the colony by pressing the [b]Unbind all[/b] key. Large cell colonies are the way towards [b]Multicellularity[/b], and the end of the Single-Cell Stage.

If you survive for twenty generations with 300 population, you are considered to have "won" the current game. You can still continue playing as you wish.

The player controls members of a species which needs to spread out into the world, and evolve into more complex lifeforms. You control a single cell from your species: if it dies, you take control of another one. You compete with cells from other species, and must ensure your own species' survival.

The world is divided into [b]patches[/b]. The area the player's cell inhabits is your [b]current patch[/b].

In your current patch, you must gather [b]compounds[/b] to keep you alive, and grow enough to [b]reproduce[/b]. Once your cell has reproduced, you move millions of years into the future and switch to the [b]Editor[/b].

In the [b]Editor[/b] you can see what happened to all existing species over the millions of years as a result of their biology and your performance in your current patch. You can see which new species [b]evolved[/b], which ones went [b]extinct[/b] and how their total [b]population[/b] counts have changed.

You can change your current patch and move others of your species to another patch in the [b]Patch Map[/b] section of the [b]Editor[/b]. You can also determine how your species evolved by [b]editing[/b] it.

You [b]edit[/b] your species by adding, removing or adjusting parts of your cell, as well as changing the species' behaviour.

When you leave the [b]Editor[/b], you switch to your current patch, and you start the cycle again. The small changes made each turn lead to big changes over the life of the planet.

To reproduce, you must duplicate your organelles. This happens gradually as you survive, but you can speed things up by gathering [thrive:compound type="ammonia"][/thrive:compound] and [thrive:compound type="phosphates"][/thrive:compound].

The orange and purple bars in the bottom right show your progress. They turn white when you’re ready to reproduce.

You should focus on [b]specialization[/b] to survive on one or two [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] sources so that you don't require many different resources at once to sustain yourself.

Also carefully consider if adding a part is truly beneficial; you don't always need to change what already works, as each part costs [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] to maintain [thrive:icon]OsmoIcon[/thrive:icon] and requires more resources to reproduce.

One possible strategy is to stay a single hex of cytoplasm and just head to the surface patches first before getting [b]photosynthesis[/b] organelles.

Removing organelles also costs [b]MP[/b] [thrive:icon]MP[/thrive:icon] as it is a mutation to your species, [u]unless they were placed in the current editor session[/u].

You can right click organelles to bring up the [b]organelle menu[/b] and select the delete option to remove them.

If you make a mistake, you can undo any change you make in the editor.

Click the undo button to continue.

You can add a [b]chemoreceptor[/b] organelle to your cell.

Chemoreceptors represent increasing your species' ability to sense things around them.

Placing one will allow you to detect compounds like [thrive:compound type="glucose"][/thrive:compound] and will guide you to them. It can also be used to detect cells of other species.
