After returning from the editor, your [b]sister cell[/b] will spawn next to you.

Your stored compounds have been [u]split with the sister cell[/u] so that it can also survive.

Depending on the selected difficulty option you may get additional [b]free resources[/b] to top up your cell after exiting the editor. On [b]normal difficulty[/b] these bonus resources are only given if you just changed to living in [u]a different patch[/u].

The resources being split after reproducing makes it a [b]strategic choice[/b] whether you want to immediately reproduce once it is possible [i]or[/i] to play for a bit longer to stock up on resources to make your next life easier.

Here in the [b]process panel[/b] you can monitor your cellular processes in real-time. The spinners show how fast a process is running and the numbers show an averaged value of recent consumption or production.

You are a small [b]cellular factory[/b] that needs to constantly produce [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] to keep itself alive.

If a number turns [color=#ff4d4d]red[/color] that means it is [u]the limiting factor[/u]. For example, if a process that produces [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] has an [i]input[/i] turn red, you will be in big trouble and will need to find [b]more of that compound[/b] before you start dying!

The toggle buttons next to processes can be used to turn them off or on. These can be used for advanced gameplay tactics.
To try out what happens when you run out of compounds, try turning off one of the processes and then [b]immediately turn it back on[/b] to stop dying. Note that the game needs to be unpaused.

Press the pause symbol in the bottom left (second button from the left) to see how pausing works. Then resume the game to continue.

It will show a real-time display of how fast each biological process is running in your cell.

You can think of your cell like [u]a small factory[/u] that is consuming and producing different compounds constantly.

Eyes haven't evolved yet, but species may already rely on sunlight (or temperature) to generate food. If that's you, pay attention!

Photosynthesis is ineffective during night-time. So, any cells that rely on [b]photosynthesis[/b] need to have enough compound storage [thrive:icon]StorageIcon[/thrive:icon] to survive the night.

There are many paths up the evolutionary ladder, but here are some things to consider to get started:

Focus on [b]specialization[/b] to survive on one or two [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] sources so that you don't require many different resources at once to sustain yourself.

Multistep metabolism pathways are more complex to manage, for example some organelles make [thrive:compound type="glucose"][/thrive:compound] instead of [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] directly and thus need a second organelle to turn that [thrive:compound type="glucose"][/thrive:compound] into usable energy.

Resist the urge to grow larger as fast as possible. You don't always need to change what already works, as each part costs [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] to maintain [thrive:icon]OsmoIcon[/thrive:icon].

It's much easier to survive as a photosynthesizer (an autotroph), but eating other microbes is more exciting.

One possible strategy is to stay very small and just head to the surface patches first before getting [b]photosynthesis[/b] organelles.

[u]Don't overthink it[/u]. Trillions of cells die before one finds a useful adaptation. You can always load a previous save if you find a dead end.

When selecting parts, [u]pay attention to the tooltips[/u] to understand what they do. Parts can do [u]more harm than good if you don't consider their function[/u].

Each part requires maintenance (called [b]osmoregulation[/b] [thrive:icon]OsmoIcon[/thrive:icon]) and some of them run [b]processes[/b] that require certain compounds to function. These can be seen in the [b]Organism Statistics[/b] panel

Additionally, the more parts you add, the more compounds you will need to reproduce making it take longer.
