Thrive is an open-source game about the evolution of life. Our main goals with thrive are to create engaging, compelling gameplay that respects our players’ intelligence, and remain as accurate as possible in our depiction of known scientific theory without compromising the former.

In Thrive, you take control of an organism on an alien planet, beginning with the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA). Your goal is to survive in the environment, adapt your species by adding mutations, and thrive. Other species will emerge to compete with yours. They will evolve via a population dynamics driven simulation with random mutations - you must improve and spread your species to surpass them. The success of your species depends both on your skill in surviving as an individual cell and the changes you make in the editor.

In the Microbe Stage, you control a single microbe or a colony of microbes bound together. You swim through a watery environment to find the resources your cell needs to stay alive and to reproduce. Once you have reproduced, you enter the editor, where you can review how well your species and others are surviving, move to new biomes, and modify your species. Add new organelles, change your membrane, and change your cell's visuals. Your goal is to become a more complex lifeform by first evolving the nucleus to become a eukaryote, then using binding agents to form cell colonies, the precursor to the first multicellular lifeforms.

Currently we are working on the first stage which is focused on microbes and microbiology. Only the first stage of the game is currently playable and it's missing some features. We do however have the core gameplay loop - surviving in the environment and editing your species in the editor - up and running. Many organelles are already implemented, some are still waiting to be added. We will also dramatically expand the algorithm behind other species' evolution. Note that these later stages are not in the game currently.

The game is built in the open source Godot engine with the C# programming language. The source code is GPLv3 licensed and our assets are Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported licensed. We are always looking for more talented developers to join our team, or if you prefer, you can directly head on over to our Github page and contribute. Alternatively, you can purchase the game to support future development. We would also really appreciate it if you told others about the game and engaged with the community. Come hang out on our community forums or Discord to talk with other Thrive fans and developers.

Thrive has spent many years in development as a volunteer project. It's been a long journey for us to even reach as far as we have, but we think we now have a solid playable foundation. We are now offering Thrive in exchange for payment in the hopes is that the increased funding will help speed up the game's development into the future.

Unsere hauptsächlichen Ziele mit Thrive sind, einen spannenden und fesselnden Spielablauf zu entwickeln, der dennoch die Intelligenz unseres Spielers zu schätzen weiß und so nah wie möglich auf der uns bekannten Theorie der Evolution basiert.

In Thrive übernimmst Du die Kontrolle über die Evolution und das Überleben von einem Organismus auf einem fremden Planeten, angefangen mit dem Urvorfahren (LUCA - Last Universal Common Ancestor). Dein Ziel ist es in der Umwelt zu überleben, deine Spezies durch Hinzufügen oder Entfernen von Mutationen anpassen und zu gedeihen. Es entstehen auch andere Arten, die mit deiner Konkurrieren, mit zufälligen Mutationen entwickeln sie sich über eine populationsdynamisch gesteuerte Simulation – Um die zu übertreffen, musst du deine Art optimieren und verbreiten. Der Erfolg deiner Spezies hängt sowohl von deinen Fähigkeiten ab als einzelne Zelle zu überleben, als auch von den vorgenommenen Veränderungen im Editor.

In der Mikroben Phase steuerst du eine einzelne Mikrobe oder eine ganze Kolonie an Mikroorganismen. Um zu überleben, sich vermehren und weiterentwickeln, braucht die Zelle Ressourcen, die findest du in der wässrigen Umgebung. Sobald du in die Zellteilung Phase eingetroffen bist, gelangst du in den Editor, dort kannst du Veränderungen an deiner Spezies vollziehen oder überprüfen wie gut deine Art und die anderen überleben. Füge neue Organellen hinzu, ändere die Membran und verändere das Erscheinungsbild der Zelle. Dein Ziel ist es den einfachen Einzeller zu einer komplexeren Lebensform zu entwickeln. Bilde einen Zellkern, um einen Eukaryonten zu erschaffen, entwickle mit Hilfe von Bindemitteln eine Zellkolonie, das sind die Vorstufen von den ersten mehrzelligen Lebensformen.

Derzeit arbeiten wir an der ersten Phase, sie bezieht sich auf Mikroben und Mikrobiologie. Nur die erste Phase des Spiels ist derzeit spielbar und es fehlen noch einige Funktionen. Der Kern des Spiels - das Überleben in der Umwelt und die Bearbeitung der eigenen Spezies im Editor - ist jedoch bereits fertiggestellt und läuft. Viele Organellen sind bereits implementiert, einige warten noch darauf hinzugefügt zu werden. Außerdem werden wir den Algorithmus für die Evolution anderer Arten drastisch erweitern. Beachte dass diese späteren Phasen derzeit noch nicht im Spiel sind.

Das Spiel wurde mit der Open-Source-Engine Godot und der Programmiersprache C# entwickelt. Der Quellcode GPLv3 und unsere Assets Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported sind lizenziert. We have already released multiple releases of Thrive, and after each we have listened to feedback from the players who played that release on our community forums. This has helped us greatly to find unintuitive parts of the game, a huge number of bugs, and also discover ideas that have affected the direction of future development. We also discuss possible future ideas and possible implementations with the community on our forums and on Discord, often helping us shape our future plans. We plan on continuing these approaches to community involvement.
Wir haben schon mehrere Versionen von Thrive veröffentlicht und nach jeder Veröffentlichung Rückmeldung der Spieler angehört. Das hat uns sehr geholfen, nicht intuitive Teile des Spiels, eine riesige Anzahl an Fehlern/Bugs und und Bugs sowie viele neue Ideen zu finden, diwelche die künfgegenwärtige Entwicklung beeinflusst haben. Currently we are workingfocusing development on the first stage which is focused onabout microbes and microbiology. We do howeverStarting from the move to macroscopic scale, the rest of the game is only included as tech demo level prototypes to show off our plans for the future stages and how they link together. For the microbial part of the game we have the core gameplay loop - surviving in the environment and editing your species in the editor - up and running. Many organelles are already with most of the planned features complete. Still there are many upcoming planned implrovemented, some are still waiting to be added. We will also dramatically expand the algorithm behind other species' evolutions to the microbe gameplay and user interfaces before we will switch development focus to the next stage.

We have a long list of planned features and fixes for the current Microbe Sly implemented stages, as well as grand plans to introduce further stages with smooth transitions between them. These will span from microbial tidepools to space-faring empires, ending with in the Ascension Stage unlocking full sandbox tools to mess with the game world. In the later stages, the game will transition to fully 3D environments, likely with 3rd person character controls. Beyond that, it will likely move to a strategic view with 4X features.
