They are expensive to maintain and slow your cell down considerably, so ensure you have a significant positive [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] balance and can afford a more sedate lifestyle for a generation or two. We recommend adding [b][color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:cilia]Cilia[/url][/color][/b] and [b][color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:flagellum]Flagella[/url][/color][/b] in subsequent generations to recover some agility.

The benefits though are obvious. [i]Eukaryotes[/i] (cells with a [b]Nucleus[/b]) gain access to more versatile future upgrades than prokaryotes (cells without one). The doubling of cell specialization effects also makes all process parts more powerful, especially if your species is more specialized.

[b]Organelles[/b] unlocked by the [b]Nucleus[/b] offer powerful new abilities, such as the [b][color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:signalingAgent]Signaling Agent[/url][/color][/b] and [b][color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:bindingAgent]Binding Agent[/url][/color][/b], or significant upgrades to existing abilities, such as [b][color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:mitochondrion]Mitochondria[/url][/color][/b] and [b][color=#3796e1][url=thriveopedia:thermoplast]Thermoplasts[/url][/color][/b]. Once a cell evolves a [b]Nucleus[/b], it gains the ability to evolve many other [b]organelles[/b] that were previously locked.

Cells with a [b]Nucleus[/b] take [b]50%[/b] less damage from any source except [i]starvation[/i] (damage due to not having any [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound]).

Cells with a nucleus gain double the effects from Cell Specialization.

A cell can only have at most one [b]Nucleus[/b] and it cannot be removed after it evolves.

The [thrive:compound type="ammonia"][/thrive:compound] produced by [b]Nitrogenase[/b] contributes towards stored resources for reproduction. Cells with [b]Nitrogenase[/b] therefore need only find [thrive:compound type="phosphates"][/thrive:compound] from the environment to reproduce at a faster rate than the base rate (the base rate is zero if passive reproduction progress is disabled in options for the current game). A good strategy is seeking out [thrive:compound type="phosphates"][/thrive:compound] chunks to engulf or stay close to.

Since [b]Nitrogen Fixation[/b] consumes [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound], you should have excess [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound] available before adding this organelle to your cell. The small amount of [b]Glycolysis[/b] performed by [b]Nitrogenase[/b] is not enough to offset its own osmoregulation cost.

Cells with [b]Binding Agents[/b] (or colonies containing cells with [b]Binding Agents[/b]) may enter binding mode. While in binding mode, each cell consumes an extra [b]+2[/b] [thrive:compound type="atp"][/thrive:compound]. Binding mode deactivates on contact with a cell of the same species, joining the cells into a colony. Binding mode can also be deactivated manually.

Cells in a colony share resources, dividing them equally between all cells. Colonies also benefit from reduced osmoregulation cost – each cell's osmoregulation cost reduces at a rate inversely proportional to the total number of colony members.

Additionally cells in a colony share their received toxin load, meaning that damage is distributed across all members, making each one much harder to kill with toxin damage.

In multicellular, cell specialization still applies and gives the existing bonuses.

However, the system is expanded to include cell adjacency bonuses. And the specialization display now shows an [u]average specialization[/u] across the whole body plan.

When cells of the same type are placed next to each other they each gain [b]extra[/b] specialization.

Try placing a cell next to one of the same type to see the green arrows indicating bonuses.

Cell specialization gives [b]bonuses[/b] to almost all aspects of a cell: process speed, osmoregulation, and organelle effectiveness.

High [b]specialization[/b] makes for very effective cells.

Specialization can be increased by only using a few organelle types, or even just one.

Try placing an organelle you already have the most of to increase your specialization or another type to [i]lower[/i] the specialization to see what effect that has.
